Without Edwards, the Wolves turn to Dosunmu, Shannon and a Kuminga reunion with Golden State

Ayo Dosunmu is the likely starter for Anthony Edwards against the Warriors tonight, and Jonathan Kuminga gets a bigger role against the team that drafted him.

The Wolves play their first game without Anthony Edwards tonight, against Golden State at Target Center, and the expected answer at shooting guard is Ayo Dosunmu. For The Win's Cory Woodroof projects a lineup of LaMelo Ball, Dosunmu, Jaden McDaniels, Jonathan Kuminga and Rudy Gobert. That is a projection; the Wolves had not announced a lineup when this was published.

Edwards is scheduled for an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee on Thursday and could miss up to two months. More on the injury.

Dosunmu has done this before

Dosunmu has come off the bench in all four games and is averaging 12.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in about 26 minutes, by ESPN's box scores, including a 14-point, 10-assist game at Orlando. He has also started in Edwards' place before. In nine starts for the Wolves last season he averaged 18.7 points and 7.3 rebounds in 33.5 minutes, ESPN's Eric Moody noted, and he scored a career-high 43 off the bench in Game 4 of the first-round series against Denver in April, the night Edwards hurt his left knee.

The minutes behind him are where the rotation gets interesting. Terrence Shannon Jr. is averaging 13.0 points in 22 minutes and has made 10 of his 20 threes. Bones Hyland, who averaged 11.8 points across 20 games without Edwards last season by Moody's count, has played sparingly so far. Donte DiVincenzo remains out after Achilles surgery.

Kuminga, against his old team

The bigger scoring load may fall on Kuminga, and the first test is the franchise that drafted him seventh overall in 2021. He spent five seasons in Golden State before being moved to Atlanta in a trade for Kristaps Porzingis, then signed with Minnesota late this summer on a one-year deal worth $6.1 million with a player option, SB Nation's Sean Keane wrote.

He has started all four games at power forward, averaging 11.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.0 steals in just under 30 minutes. He is 7 of 15 from 3-point range and has committed one turnover all season. Keane argues Kuminga can supply some of the pressure on the rim that Edwards provides, if not his volume from outside: Edwards was taking 26 shots a game.

Ball's role grows the most. He was brought in this summer to take ballhandling off Edwards, and he is averaging 14.8 points and 6.3 assists through four games, 12 of 32 from deep. With Edwards out, the Wolves' half-court offense will run through him far more often.

The Warriors' side

Golden State (1-3) won for the first time on Monday, 134-114 at Denver, when rookie Yaxel Lendeborg scored 31 with 12 rebounds and Stephen Curry added 24. ESPN lists Lendeborg as day-to-day with a foot injury, and Porzingis, Moses Moody and Jimmy Butler III as out.

Tip-off is 8 p.m. ET. At noon Wednesday, ESPN's listing had DraftKings with Minnesota -4.5 and the total at 227.5. Every venue's price is on the game page.
